Its always nice to be in the company of people who you can relax with, who allow you to let your hair down and who you can trust with whatever thoughts come out of your mouth in the days you spend together. My weekend was spent with 3 people who let me do just that and it felt so good to just BE. There were four of us: myself, my mom, my aunt and my cousin. We traveled to Rocky Gap Mountain in Maryland and began our little road trip bright and early on Friday morning; me and mom.
The boys were being crazy that morning as I was getting ready and I texted mom, “I’m ready when you are!” I think she got the hint and she came to get me. I didn’t care how early we were to our destination… it was time to go and let the boys be boys! I forgot my camera, so it became an iPhone photo kind of weekend! (Forgive me)
Mom wouldn’t let me drive (at all) and being the control freak I am, I should’ve spiked my coffee that morning. The drive was fine and always full of good conversation and music… we almost got hit by a wide load truck once, but who’s counting? We lived through it and I sipped my Starbucks Nonfat, No Whip, Mocha as a ‘front seat passenger driver’ while mom got us there in one piece. I probably drove her crazy (just a bit) but for a person who drives everywhere all week long, this was a big deal for me to just SIT!
Two or so hours later, we arrived in Cumberland, Maryland; a quaint little town full of smelly old shops that took our breath away (literally) upon opening the door. The people were sweet, very chatty and proud of their stores but unfortunately, we didn’t find anything we had to have. We did however, find a Hobby Shop that was full of Lionel Train Sets and I was so close to purchasing one for the boys but didn’t have enough guts. I think it’s definitely something hubby should pick out with me; he’s much better in a hobby shop than I’ll ever be!
We spent the morning/afternoon walking the town and eating lunch outside under shade trees before we headed to the Resort and checked in. Just like that, our PiggyToes were laid out on lawn chairs facing the lake and Pina Coladas were served! It was peaceful and relaxing and just perfect! I think since there was nothing to do around us, it helped me to relax faster and easier. I tend to want to explore new areas when there’s a lot to do. This location, resort, the view… everything, was just what I needed. And there was nothing to do but spend time at the Garden Spa, hang out with the people you are with, lay by the pool (or the beautiful lake) and RELAX!
Saturday was our Spa Day… Have you ever had an Organic Chocolate Pedicure? *sigh* It was THE BEST thing in the world. The chocolate didn’t feel like cream, nor like oil, and it definitely wasn’t thick like mud… It was silky smooth and such a cool experience! My 1st pedicure with chocolate (& another pina colada!) – I caught up on some good magazines, chatted with the girls and had such a nice time! Dare I show you my chocolate PiggyToes?
The weekend was full of good food, yummy snacks, walks around the lake, time by the pool, a disgusting creature of the outdoors and movie nights with our new pj’s from ‘Roses’! Yes Roses; it could be compared to a KMart & was by far the best store in Cumberland! And it didn’t smell there either. We seemed to never run out of things to talk about and I’m pretty sure that during every conversation we had, we laughed! It was just a great weekend! (minus that bug)
On Sunday, my aunt and cousin left before us and mom & I decided to rent a paddle boat before we made the drive home. It was comical to say the least; her and I in a paddle boat by ourselves, trying to make our way around the lake. We didn’t even get out of the dock before we were laughing so hard, we cried. People must have thought we were crazy. I told the guy to keep his eye on us and if I waved at him, he absolutely needed to come get us. We worked so hard to not get that far, peddled fast to arrive 10 feet in front of us and found ourselves going in circles at times too. It was a fun time and a great laugh! If only that trip was recorded; I think the world would have poked fun!
I arrived home to my 3 guys late afternoon and just like that, I was back at it… I took the boys to the grocery store to get some food in our house and smelled something gross during our whole shopping trip. I wasn’t sure where the smell was coming from until check-out when I bent down to kiss them both and realized, it was them! 2 stinky boys! Daddy had them riding bikes on the trail, cutting the grass, gardening and weeding that day… I couldn’t take the smell. When we got home, I quickly changed sheets, gave them both a bath, made dippy eggs for dinner and then we watched The Lorax while sugar cookies baked in the oven. My life instantly became busy again but it was a sweet end to the weekend! If your a mom, you totally deserve a little break with a few good friends or close family members. Here’s my weekend getaway ADVICE:
Go with people that allow you to let your hair down.
Go with people who you know don’t judge others thoughts and feelings and beliefs. Being open is a good quality and trust me, you will talk a LOT during your time away so there’s bound to be a lot of opinions shared.
Go with people who won’t talk about you when you go to your separate rooms.
Go with people that you KNOW you will laugh with… the whole time!
Go with people who are FUN!
Pick a location that forces you to relax and catch up on sleep.
Save your money and book it in advance so you have something to look forward to!
Its hard to travel with a group of people (especially women) but if you choose those people wisely, you will have the time of your life! I think every mom needs a weekend away to recoup! I feel rejuvenated & rested… And then my 2 little guys wore me out on my 1st day home ; )
