This weekend, I was reminded that I didn’t have a ‘First Day of Kindergarten’ sign for Rocco. At first, my internal reaction was, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to get to Michaels (craft store) or The Dollar Store or somewhere!!! We need a sign! I asked a mama friend if she had a sign and she said that she had a chalkboard (used for more than one occasion)! ‘Oh my gosh. I need to borrow that!’ I thought.
By late afternoon yesterday, the sign still was never accomplished so I shifted my thoughts to, ‘Whatever. I’ll figure something out or I won’t. We’ll see.’
I’m not good at the crafty, DIY stuff. Then, late last night, we got in our car to run a last minute errand and we passed my awesome neighbor on our way out. She was outside drawing a ‘First Day of Kindergarten’ sign on her driveway.
Look at this! I NEED to do something!
I wound down my window and then we both got a good laugh when realizing that she wrote ‘FRIST’ instead of ‘FIRST’… hehehehe
See! I said. Serves ya right for one-upping all the neighbor mamas! ; )
I love her; for real… I do!
The sign thing was haunting me but then my brain forgot anyway. Until this morning, I woke around 6:30am and stared at my ceiling.
I need a sign.
I need a sign.
A….. what do I have?
I breast-fed Mario, let Roman pick out his own clothes, cooked breakfast, poured milk, let the dog out, took a shower, then got my Kindergartner ready for school! I took him outside to snap a few ‘First Day’ pics.
My sweet boy. Kindergarten. TODAY. I can’t believe it.
He didn’t seem thrilled at all and needed a little photo break. All I could think about was a stupid sign. I need a sign so that I know this day was his First Day of Kindergarten!
I went inside and on my computer. I typed, www.google.com. I typed, ‘First Day of Kindergarten sign’ and then I scrolled until I found one.
I ran upstairs to the printer, grabbed the sheet of paper and ran outside.
Little dude got a rock in his shoe.
I handed him the sign and got my camera ready.
And then I saw it…
“I CAN’T WIN!” I said aloud.
“Are we done?” Rocco asked.
“Mommy’s trying to make you a sign.” I told him.
I ran back inside.
Art supplies are packed in a box. Everything “crafty” that I own is packed.
I grabbed a sharpy & a book and this was all I could come up with.
Poor thing had had it with the pictures.
And I hated this stupid sign.
I took it from Rocco and we played in the yard together. We ran around the yard and then I pushed him on our neighbors swing.
That’s when it hit me…
I don’t need a sign.
*I took a deep breath*
For all the years to come, every. single. time. I see this picture I am going to know that this…
Was Rocco’s FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN.
Why? Because I’m his mama. And I won’t forget this day. Ever.
Every time he wears this shirt with those little ivory buttons, I’m going to remember that it was that shirt that he wore on his FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN.
When it’s passed down to Roman and he puts it on, I will still remember that it was the shirt that Rocco wore on his first day of kindergarten.
When I show him that photo one day, I’ll remember. “This was your first day of Kindergarten.” I’ll tell him.
I don’t need a sign.
I don’t need any of that.
When us mamas look at pictures of our little ones, we don’t forget. We just don’t. We’re mamas!
SO mama friends, lets try not to be so hard on ourselves this year. Let’s try to not let what others do make us feel like we’re not doing enough. Let’s just do our best and teach our kids to do their best too.
There will be many times in our children’s school ‘career’ that we’re going to want to make something more perfect than it already is, but let’s just take a deep breath and do our best, whatever that is.
And if it’s still not good enough, then you’ll need to find neighbors like mine. Neighbor mama friends who have signs on their front step. And then when they aren’t looking, you can sneak over and snap a few pics of your own. K?
This was my best today. Today, I did my best.
Happy Back to School!
